We are a small, family owned farm near Silver City. We specialize in preserving crop varieties that are regionally adapted to Iowa, as well as developing new varieties. We also maintain a 2 and a half acre heritage orchard.
At this time our main focus is genetic preservation and sharing growing information.
Carrots are an easy crop to grow in southwest Iowa. They have few pests and can be grown successfully without any sprays. They are also a super nutrient rich veggie that's very high in beta carotene. Boil or steam them slightly to release the most nutrients.
Our daughter loves kohlrabi and so will your family. Kohlrabi is easier to grow than other brassica crops like broccoli and cabbage. The dreaded cabbage worm doesn't affect the part of the plant that's harvested. It's sweet and crunchy with a mild cabbage flavor. It's great raw or cooked in stir-fry.
A common misconception is that sweet potatoes don't grow well in Iowa. Nothing could be further from the truth. There are many varieties that do great in our climate. Sweet potatoes come in a variety of colors too. This variety, called Becca's Purple, has purple skin and deep purple flesh with a nice mild sweetness. We currently grow 13 different varieties of sweet potato on the farm. Most of them heirloom varieties.
