This apple was found growing near the 106 building at the historic Glenwood Resource Center (GRC). Opened in 1866 and once known as the Iowa Institution for Feeble-Minded Children, the GRC had its own orchard and greenhouses. Several pear and apple trees can still be found on the campus.
This apple has been found to be growing in at least 2 locations on the GRC Campus.
The tree was approximately 30 feet tall and it's exact age is unknown. It produces a medium sized, dark red, glossy apple. It's an early apple ripening in the first half of August here in southwest Iowa. It's a soft apple when fully ripe with a very delicious classic apple flavor. It doesn't store very long and needs to be eaten quickly or processed. Because of it's soft texture it makes very flavorful applesauce or apple butter.
