The France Dark Red apple is a seedling apple grown on the France family farm near Tipton, Iowa. The apple is estimated to be around 25 to 35 years old. It's a large multi-trunked tree growing in a beautiful meadow. The tree is growing well, produces a large amount of apples every year, and has never been sprayed.
The apple is dark red and some of them are almost black. It's a small to medium apple that's crisp, sweet and has red streaks throughout the flesh giving it some berry flavors in the background.
The apple ripens in early September but hangs on the tree all winter making it great for wildlife as well as for fresh eating.
We are working on propagating this variety to make it available to others. We've also planted several open pollinated seedlings.
